Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at karla@papaloteot.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

At Papalote we help with a wide range of conditions, including but not limited to Autism, ADHD, developmental delays, mental health conditions, sensory processing difficulties, fine and gross motor skills, separation anxiety, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and challenges related to retained primitive reflexes..

The length of occupational therapy treatment depends on the individual and their specific needs. Some children may require short-term therapy, while others may require ongoing sessions for 6 months or longer. Your therapist will work with you to determine the appropriate length of treatment for your needs.

Families may seek occupational therapy after their pediatrician recommends services based on identified developmental delays, a diagnosis like the ones mentioned here, or for personal reasons such as, “I want my child to have better social skills.” Whatever the reason may be, pediatric occupational therapy is beneficial to kids with or without a diagnosis, to improve any area of development such as fine and gross motor skills, sensory issues, coordination, mental health conditions, communication, managing emotions, etc.

We are private pay only, we do not accept insurance. We can provide a superbill for you to submit to your insurance carrier to ask for reimbursement. We offer flexible pricing options for families facing financial difficulties. Please contact us to talk about accessible options.

We expect caregivers to be involved in the therapy process. At the end of each session we will talk about what we did, clinical observations, recommend supports you can implement at home, and we will ask about how the Home Exercise Program is going in order to modify as needed.

Therapy takes place at the client’s home. In some instances, we may use a public space such as a playground or library, or a play space for small group sessions.

Sensory integration is the way the brain organizes, interprets, and responds to information received from the senses. When we experience difficulties processing sensory information, it can lead to challenges in various areas of life. Through sensory integration we aim to help kids develop better sensory processing skills so that they can better manage sensory input and particirate more fully in everyday activities.

A reflex is an automatic, instinctual movement that aids in development, growth, and survival. Many reflexes are active throughout our lives. Other reflexes called primitive reflexes surface in the womb and infancy and are designed to become inactive (or integrated) in the first yearn of life. Sometimes primitive reflexes remain active and are associated with conditions and challenges such as anxiety, learning challenges, Autism, ADHD, sensory processing disorders, developmental delays, reading and writing difficulties, and mental health challenges, to name a few. Through our reflex integration and innate rhythmic movement therapy, we can improve many of these challenges with a play-based approach.

There are many factors to consider in order to qualify for a sliding scale. Some common ones are families facing financial difficulties, single-parent households, families unable to access therapy services for their child due to insurance denial, families facing discrimination, and more. Please contact us to discuss your specific situation and arrange a plan that works for you.

Papalote Occupational Therapy provides services in the McAllen, Mission, Edinburg, and Weslaco areas.

We have a strict cancellation policy and we understand that sometimes emergencies or unforeseen situations arise. If you need to cancel, please do so at least 24 hours in advance. Cancellations made with shorter notification will be charged the full appointment. Emergencies are considered at the therapist’s discretion and require that you call. We do not accept email or text cancellations; these will be considered a “no show.” Please consult your Client Agreement for complete information.
